Catherine the Great called her collection The Hermitage.  It was the most celebrated gathering of art in the world, assembled in a home that was itself a kind of monument.

 

My house is a brick colonial, not a palace— but it is a sanctuary and a curated reflection of who I'm becoming. Right now, it's full of my own paintings.

I started painting seriously at fifty, which means I arrived with a lot of ideas already inside me — decades of reading, teaching, and asking questions I couldn't answer any other way. Painting is where I can think about symbolism, narrative, and meaning in a completely different language.  My work moves between portraiture, abstraction, landscape, and collage — sometimes all in the same painting.

 

In my hermitage, the work reveals women's inner lives, spiritual thresholds, the experience of change, and the light that seems to come from somewhere just beyond what we can see.  I don't always know where a painting comes from. I'm learning to trust that.
